10 ways we help the environment at the Aphrodites Boutique Hotel
We are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful regions of England, and we are proud to do our bit for the environment.
Ten ways in which we help the environment at our eco-friendly hotel is by:
1. Running a biomass boiler which operates on wood-chip. Energy solutions based on biomass and bio-fuels provide clean and renewable energy, which in turn reduces emissions of greenhouse
gases.
2. Operating a water harvesting system to flush the toilets, which works by collecting rainwater and reusing it. By fitting a rainwater filter to an underground drainage pipe we collect water, while discarding leaves and other debris. The clean water is then stored in a tank and pumped on demand to dedicated points, including toilet cisterns.
3. Using electricity from renewable resources by means of Biomass, which refers to any organic material derived from plants and animals. Humans have been using biomass for generating energy for years, and it is commonly implemented when leftover biomass, such as wood waste or paper waste are burnt to produce steam, which then produces electricity.
4. Serving organic and locally-sourced food wherever possible, which not only ensures fresh food at the table, but also cuts down the carbon footprint and supports local farmers and suppliers.
5. Running a carbon neutral property, which means we don´t use any fossil fuels to provide heating and electricity, and all of our energy is produced by biomass sources, including the use of wood chip fuel.
6. Recycling wherever possible to reduce wastage and to protect the environment.
7. Further developing our eco-policy where possible to further minimise our impact on the environment during normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.
8. Implementing ongoing training to ensure our environmental responsibilities and are understood by all members of staff.
9. Preventing pollutions escaping out into the environment and minimising outputs of emissions, effluents to drains and sewers and wastes to disposal facilities. Wherever possible we will re-use, recover and recycle objects.
10. Openly communicating with staff, guests and eco-friendly companies to protect the environment and to do our bit for the conservation of the Lake District and beyond.
We believe everyone has a responsibility to protect the environment hey live in. The Aphrodites is a hotel where we are all very conscious of the world around us, and by helping reduce our Carbon Footprint and protecting the local countryside, we are helping to make the world a better place for everyone.
